Aeration

Aeration

Aeration is the driving of either solid-tine or hollow-tines into the lawn and is done to:
  • relieve compaction
  • facilitate air exchange and moisture absorption.
Oxygen, which is vital for root growth gets into the compaction layer and carbon dioxide, harmful because it inhibits the passage of water into the roots, escapes. Aeration can be done effectively at any time of the year but September is best, if it is already part of a good maintenance programme.

what is the difference

Both types of aerations do the same thing, in that they relieve compaction by making holes in the lawn, allowing the soil to better absorb oxygen and moisture.

Solid tine aeration punctures holes by means of a solid tine (spike) being driven into the lawn. The puncture holes are smaller in diameter than the hollow tine and therefore might be considered a method which achieves less compaction relief. Solid tine aerations are however a better choice on hard, significantly compact soil as they achieve maximum depth more consistently due to the pressure over surface area principle. If the lawn has heavy traffic throughout the year from children and pets then solid tine aeration can be a better choice if you wish to provide the lawn compaction relief every year or even twice a year, as it is less costly.

Hollow tine aeration punctures holes by means of a hollow tine, which at the same time as puncturing a hole, removes the soil in the shape of a plug from that hole depositing them on the lawn surface. It is a wider hole than the solid tine and therefore if the correct depth can be achieved, will provide better compaction relief. We remove the soil plugs from the top of the lawn and place them in your garden refuse bin or in any other convenient place for you.

liquid aeration

Liquid aeration is an alternative to the normal machine aeration described above and can be used for lawns that are difficult to access with the big machine or that are sloped or that have numerous tree roots.
It is a soil amendment which opens up compacted soil surfaces and has an integral surfactant which helps improve surface and rootzone oxygen and water penetration.
