environmental ethos

healthy soil = healthy plant = healthy planet

This is our mantra and everything we do at Guardian Lawns is driven by this approach, creating a healthy, natural growing environment for lawns to flourish, so you can enjoy them with a clear conscience.

CLEAR CONSCIENCE LAWNS

In our many years of lawn care experience we have learned that there are a variety of ways to make grass green, not all of which are good for the long-term health of the grass plant and the soil from which it grows. In fact many methods are environmentally unfriendly.

Our aim at Guardian Lawns is to apply treatments and procedures which provide a lawn that looks great, kids can play on and that you can relax and admire with a clear conscience.

At Guardian Lawns we are constantly listening for new information and insights into lawn care, scrutinising any new and relevant research and finding ways in which to incorporate new thinking and improvements into our practice. Knowledge and understanding is not a fixed position and we're always looking to expand ours!

A scientific approach

Picture
Grasses, just like trees are chlorophyll- based plants, absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere for use in photosynthesis. Photosynthesis uses sunlight and water to convert CO2 into carbohydrates to generate energy and growth, ‘fixing’ greenhouse gases from the air into the soil by sequestration and providing oxygen as a bi-product. A proportion of this absorbed carbon is transferred from the dense canopy of grass and fibrous root system into the soil as food for soil microbes. Microbes process the carbon into organic matter and nutrients into a form the plant needs. A healthy and diverse microbial population is the crucial element for a healthy lawn. The soil is alive and there are more microbes in a handful of healthy soil, than the number of people who have ever lived on the planet.

HEALTHY SOIL = HEALTHY PLANT = HEALTHY PLANET

As we have mentioned, it is this mantra that drives our treatment strategy, and we commit to:
  • Using fertilisers with up to 100% organic content
  • Using fertilisers, the production of which releases less carbon into the atmosphere than traditional synthetic fertilisers.
  • Using fertilisers with a lower proportion of slow-release Nitrogen so that none is leached into ground water.
  • Using the absolute minimum of chemicals of the lawn. Sometimes an area of land or lawn is so weed infested or disease infected that an immediate application of the weed treatment or fungicide is required to establish a baseline from which we can re-establish a healthy soil profile and healthy lawn. This is a last resort.

As part of our seasonal treatments we apply an organic soil conditioner, which is special mixture of humic acid, seaweed and Iron, calibrated to suite the needs of the lawn and the time of the year.
