Mowing Advice
|
How often should I mow the lawn?
The rule is to mow often but not too closely. In this way excess leaf growth is prevented, fertiliser loss curtailed and the menace of weeds, worms, moss and course grasses reduced. The grass itself assumes a dwarf habit and the production of tillers is stimulated. It is the development of these side-shoots which thickens the lawn in Summer. Cut twice a week when the grass is growing vigorously in the Summer. Cut once a week in early Spring and Autumn. Do not leave clippings on grass. If you do weeds are spread, the turf becomes spongy and susceptible to disease, worm activity is greatly encouraged and aeration impeded. Do not cut more than 1/3 of the plant off at any one time. |
WATERING ADVICE
How often should I water the lawn?
The amount of rainfall in Scotland is usually sufficient to keep the roots well supplied with moisture. Prolonged dry periods can however occur in late Spring and Summer and there may be a need for extra watering.
When should I water the lawn?
Water in the early morning is better as it allows the water to evaporate from the grass canopy during the day and the soil to remain moist. How often depends on soil type and weather. There are no exact rules but once per week under ordinary dry conditions or twice a week if abnormally hot weather.
The guiding principal is to allow the lawn to dry out to some extent between waterings so as to let air in and stimulate root development. A sprinkle every day or two is bad practice – it will lead to the spread of moss and a shallow rooting system. Much better to water well once or twice a week.
