Top Dressing

Top dressing

Top dressing is the application of a bulky mixture, usually made from soil, loam and sand. The serious lawn owner would apply it every year but it is labour and time intensive and therefore not inexpensive and customers may choose to do it every other year.

Our technician will advise you on the best top soil profile for your lawn after inspecting a sample of the soil and root zone.

Benefits of top dressing:
  • stimulates the formation of new shoots
  • produces a denser sward
  • removes minor hollows
  • thatch decomposes more efficiently in this layer and drought resistance is improved.
Top dressing should be applied whenever the surface has been disturbed, especially after scarification which prunes turf and removes plant material (thatch) and encourages new root development.
